GENRE: MMO

The genre “MMO” stands for “massively multiplayer online game.” These games are personally my favorite as they are games played online with a large number of players, sometimes up to the hundreds of thousands across multiple servers. These games often consist of an open world, but their key component is the ability to play alongside others. In an MMO, you can compete against (or team-up with) other players at a large scale. You can also have meaningful reactions with others in this online world. The beauty of MMOs is that they feature a number of other game genres, like RPG (more commonly referred to as MMORPG). Despite the genre’s main focus revolving around multiplayer games, there are still a fair amount of AI-controlled characters, i.e NPCs and mobs. These characters can give our quests or act as opponents in many MMORPGs.

If you are someone who doesn’t like to play a video game alone or would like to experience a new world with others, MMOs would be your fit. They can share common elements to RPGs, but there will be a large number of people in the same instance as you working on the same quests or goals, or fighting the same common enemy.
