The genre name “FPS” stands for “first-person shooter” which is often centered around guns or weapon-based combat from a first-person perspective. Therefore, you’re playing through the eyes of a certain character. This is unlike games that give you the option of third-person shooting, in which you are able to see from behind and around you (i.e. the popular game, Fortnite).

The mechanics for FPS games are much more demanding than RPGs or MMOs considering aim is more important. The genre also shares similar traits with other genres, like action. It often includes both single player and multiplayer options. Several popular FPS games have risen in popularity and competition with stellar turnout in the esports community. There’s typically power-ups or combat involved, some with a varying choice of weapons. In multiplayer games, you may be working with a team to take down an enemy.

If you’re looking to let off some steam by battling enemies or shooting a gun, this genre is for you! Many people who are against video games are often turned away due to the nature of this genre of video games. The violence may not be for everyone’s taste, but these games are more than what meets the eye. There are some games considered “FPS” due to your first-person view and interaction with the world you are in but do not include violence. Take the puzzle game Portal for example–this is considered an FPS but lacks any direct combat or shooting elements. Instead, the first-person view allows the player to be more immersed in the world.
